The Baby Group By Rowan ColemanIn my opinion, Rowan Coleman is one of the best modern fiction writers around today. She first came to prominence in 2002 with her first book ‘Growing Up Twice’ which I thought was an excellent first novel. I have been a big fan ever since and have thoroughly enjoyed all her subsequent novels. ‘The Baby Group‘ ,like all the others, is written with great insight and perception that shows that she clearly understands what it is to be a woman in the 21st century!

The Baby Group‘, as you might guess from the title is about a group of mums (and one dad!) who all meet and form a bond through looking after their young babies.

The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum Upon first glance of the story and the characters within, you could assume that this book is the usual “chick lit” nonsense about a girl trying to save her love life, family and career. Emily Haxby is a 29 year old lawyer in Manhattan who on the surface appears to have everything; a successful job, a devoted doctor boyfriend in Andrew and good friends. However, from the start, it is clear that Emily is on the verge of a melt down! Andrew is about to propose and Emily believes it is the last thing that she needs whilst her job goes from bad to worse when she is given the task of helping out on a case that everyone in the office dreads and with a letchy boss. To top it off, her beloved grandfather has Alzheimer’s and her distant father is no help for her in times of crisis. As you can see, it’s the perfect set up for a romantic- type of book (I’ve also read a review that compared Emily to Carrie Bradshaw’s smarter sister, but aside from living in Manhattan, I fail to see the comparison!) but upon starting this book, I was taken in a different direction…

Dinner for Two by Mike GayleI have loved every book of Mike Gayle’s books that I have read and ‘Dinner for Two’ is absolutely no exception. From the moment that I started reading the book I felt that an old friend was chatting to me and I just wanted to keep on reading – so much so that I finished the book in just three days which is quite a feat for me (having two young daughters and a part time job!)

Dinner for Two tells the story of journalist Mike Harding and his wife Izzy. They both work in magazines and have busy successful careers so the last thing on either of their minds is about starting a family. That is until Izzy suddenly discovers that she is pregnant but then sadly loses the baby. This could either throw their relationship into turmoil or make their relationship stronger.
