Be Charitable and Get a Nice Book

Our charitable auction raised over $300 thanks to book donations from DK Travel, HarperCollins, Profile Books, Canongate Books, Hachette and Headline. We are delighted that amount raised is enough to support a year of education of a girl in one of the developing countries in Asia and Africa. Thanks to all charitable donators and publishers which supported the auction.

Every cent raised on the auction is going towards girls’ education program of charity Room to Read. The program identifies girls at risk of dropping out of school and ensures that they have the opportunity to complete secondary school. Currently, the majority of program participants are ages 7 to 12.

We plan more similar actions for 2011 as we strongly believe that world change starts with educated children.

***

We have arranged a charitable book giveaway/auction to raise money for our chosen charity Room to Read. We have selected Room to Read because we share their philosophy that world change starts with educated children. Room to Read works with primary school children in less developed countries to help build literacy skills and instil a love of reading among children. They also support girls to complete secondary school and develop the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond. They recognise female education as a powerful tool in the fight against poverty.

Curious Book Fans created our own micro site on Room to Read’s web site and we aim to raise at least US$ 500 which is amount needed to support one year of education for two girls in one of 9 countries across Asia and Africa.

How we are doing it?

We have asked publishers to donate books and the response has been magnificent. We are happy to report that we have 52 copies of 22 fabulous books available and want to offer our sincere thanks to Canongate Books, DK Publishing, Hachette, HarperCollins, Headline and Profile Books for supporting our charitable auction. We ask you to use red ‘Bid here’ links in the list below to bid for books that may interest you. The starting prices are below the third the current Amazon UK price. The highest bidder (or highest bidders – where we have more than one copy of the book) will pay the bid amount to charity through our page on Room to Read site when the auctions end at midnight on December 31st. We will send the copies of auctioned books after donations are verified on the charity site.

The idea is that you can get a great book at a good price and thanks to the support of our publisher sponsors, every penny raised will go to the charitable cause. Of course, if you want to support Room To Read and don’t want to bid for books, that would also be really kind. All available books are listed below with links for bidding. The auction is open only to visitors of the site who have a UK mailing address to which the books can be sent. You can bid on as many books as you want. Please note that bids are in US$ because that’s the currency that’s needed for donations on the Room to Read website.

Please tell your friends and family and any other curious book fans who might be interested.

Freedom by Jonathan Franzen HarperCollins
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
HarperCollins
Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of too much liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom’s intensely realized characters, as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait of our time.
