In Susan Lewis’ latest book, The Truth About You, Lainey Hollingsworth is determined to find exactly that – the truth about her past. Her mother, now deceased, never told her anything about her real father, and now that she is no longer around to ask, the only way to find out is for Lainey to travel to her native Italy and to the town where she was born. However, in order to do so, she also needs to sort out her life at home even if that means uncovering some unpleasant truths. Where is her husband Tom just when she needs him and what does her teenaged daughter Tierney get up to? There are more secrets than she probably wants the answers to. When she does learn the truth about herself, how will she cope? And in doing so, will she be there to support her family and help, them come through their own trials?
I very much enjoyed The Truth About You from the very first page even though I felt it was not typical of Susan Lewis’ usual story. It was intriguing though and from the very first page I wanted to find out, along with Lainey, all about her mysterious past. There was also a great deal of intrigue as far as Tom and Tierney were concerned and that all added to my overall enjoyment of the book.
All of the characters are interesting and I felt that I really got to know them as the story unfolded. What’s more, I found myself caring about them and hoping that there was to be a happy outcome in all the story lines. They were believable and definitely acted in the way that families with teenagers do!
One particularly poignant aspect of The Truth About You is Lainey’s relationship with her stepfather, Peter, who is suffering from dementia. At times, it is painful to read as she struggles to come to terms with his increasing frailty and confusion; it may be a little too close to home for some readers in similar circumstances.
Overall though, The Truth About You is another thoroughly enjoyable book from Susan Lewis.
