Cuddle Up Tight! (Paperback) By (author) Rosie ReeveYou can tell that any book with the title ‘Cuddle up Tight!‘ is going to be a good one and leave you with a warm happy feeling – and there’s only one way to read such a book – cuddling up tight with your little one!

Cuddle Up Tight!‘ is a delightful picture story book written and illustrated by Rosie Reeve. This is the first of her books I read with my daughters so I didn’t really know what to expect, but as I said at the beginning, I felt from the title that it was going to be just our sort of book! It tells the story of a little girl who goes to bed every night with her teddy. They cuddle up and say ‘night! night!’. However, on this one particular night there is a storm blowing up outside and Teddy is scared. He wants big Spotty Leopard in bed with him because he is not scared of anything! But Spotty Leopard cannot sleep without Elephant, and then they discover that Zebra is not feeling very well so he has to come into bed as well!

So the bed is full up with toys that now need a bedtime story! When this is read and it’s time to go to sleep the little girl realises that Dinosaur is all on his own so he has to come into bed too! So now they’re all ready to go to sleep when suddenly, the little girl discovers that there is no room in bed for her, so all the toys except Teddy have to come out. They are all arranged cosily at the foot of the bed and everyone can go to sleep. The final page reads ‘Night-night Teddy! Night-night me! Cuddle up tight!’ This is a nice peaceful end to the story and good preparation for sending your own little one to bed!

This is definitely a story that will appeal to any small child who likes taking lots of toys to bed. The whole book is written as though the little girl is speaking and it is very reminiscent to the way that my own daughters speak to their toys. Also, I think that it is very similar to how a toddler’s mind works and I can well imagine my daughter sfollowing the same thought processes!

A very good element of this story is the way that every time a new toy finds itself in bed, the little girl has to say ‘night-night! cuddle up tight!’. This has a cumulative effect as each time there is one more good night to say. Because this is so repetitious it is easy for children to join in and feel that they are reading the book with you. My daughters particularly love joining in with ‘Cuddle up tight!’ and we have to cuddle extra tight while she is saying it. It also fits in nicely with our own bedtime routine of saying goodnight to everyone.

I really like the illustrations in this book. They are both simple but effective and the outlines look like they have been done using the sort of coloured pencil that a child might use themselves. There is one picture that is so expressive – teddy lying in bed with his hands over his face looking scared because of the storm! Having said this though, all the illustrations are good and provide talking points in their own right.

So overall I thoroughly recommend ‘Cuddle up Tight!’ to share with young children particularly those who are very caring around their cuddly toys. It is a simple story but will get your child talking and thinking!

My name is Jo and I have been married to Simon for nine years. We have two beautiful daughters – Rachel who is six and Natalie who is almost five and starting school in January. I also have two step children aged twenty one and seventeen so family life is never dull. I also manage to work three days for a local education authority where I support the teaching of literacy in primary schools. I love my job and it’s ideal for a book lover like me. In my spare time I run, dance and occasionally tread the boards with my local amateur dramatics group. My first love is reading though and you will never find me without a book on the go. My husband is also an avid reader and we are hoping to pass on our love of reading to our daughters. They certainly love their bedtime stories every night. Although I have and English degree and I am familiar with most of the classics, I generally read much lighter stuff these days. It’s mainly ‘chic lit’ but I also enjoy a good thriller or courtroom drama. I have so many favourite authors and this list tends to change regularly depending on what I am reading.
